Skip Notes

*1 Affectionately known as “Smitty” by his most serious fans.

*2 Martin Luther, “Preface to Georg Rhau’s Symphoniae iucundae (1538),” Luther’s Works: Liturgy and Hymns, vol. 53 (Philadelphia: Fortress, 1957), 321.

*3 Barry Manilow’s “I Write the Songs” from the album Tryin’ to Get the Feeling, released in 1975, was a favorite of my mom’s. My mom was a sucker for the saccharine soft rock of seventies music, and my early years were marked by a steady diet of artists like the Carpenters, Johnny Mathis, Bread, and Mr. Manilow, to name a few. My cool aunt intervened when I was in fourth grade and gave me my first two cassette tapes with Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” and Michael Jackson’s “Off the Wall,” which opened a whole new universe to me. Unfortunately, it was too late to override the influence, for I might have been the only kid in my school that could perform “Can’t Smile Without You” using only sign language and had every word of “Copacabana” memorized (which I have never forgotten).
